Blue Note: Late Night Groove Series (take 3)

A table during a Friday night show at Blue Note usually run about $25-35, but a couple summers ago Jared and I discovered that they have late night shows -- we're talking so late it's early. (Read my account of our first show here. Or Jared's account here.) These Friday and Saturday night shows feature: "New York's up-and-coming jazz, soul, hip-hop, R&B and funk artists." We went a couple times and although it makes for a really late night (shows ending somewhere around 2-3 in the morning and then trekking home on a local train uptown from the Village to get home at like 4am) it's been well worth it each time considering the caliber of the music we've heard and the price of tickets being $8-10 (typical ticket price for one of their late night shows).

I'm sure the 8pm and 10:30pm shows are phenomenal, but the Late Night Groove Series is definitely a winner for someone like me who:
- doesn't own money tree
- enjoys jazz without being a connoisseur of the form
- has a music taste that entertains a bit of the avant-garde and digs the cross-pollination of music genres
- doesn't mind staying up late and getting home at about 4am

Anyways, all of that was basically a longish intro to tell you this:

Leah gets up really early on Saturday mornings; so consequently, our typical Friday night ends earlier than that of our friends. This makes attending something like the above mentioned Late Night Groove Series slightly difficult, considering the start time of the set is ~12:30 am.

Well, wanting to attend a late-night show at Blue Note, Leah and I decided to take advantage of the fact that her early morning Saturday would not be in affect for conference weekend. We enjoyed the night of April 4th (err...the morning of April 5th?) listening to a Brooklyn-based band named "Soul Cycle." The show was great. On their youtube site, they describe themselves as "a sublime mix of jazz, funk, and breakbeats, with a little reggae, Latin, and African grooves thrown in for good measure." I'd say that's fairly accurate and would definitely encourage people to go to one of their shows. If the opportunity arises, I could easily see myself enjoying my time at another one of their shows.

Old Springs Pike

I find it difficult to think of many things better than an Old Springs Pike show...unless maybe it's an Old Springs Pike show with someone whose company you enjoy.
This is why I count my blessings when I think that I've been able to experience such a thing on two separate occasions.

Swashbuckling in NYC

I didn't exactly fight any pirates today, but at least I know I'm not a pansy.

happy ending?

Some of you know about Patrick Moberg's recent craigslist posting. You heard it from a friend who sent you a link over IM while you were at work, saw on another friends blog, read about it on gothamist, possibly watched an online video, and you've undoubtedly went to his website (nygirlofmydreams.com). But in case you have no idea what I'm talking about and don't feel like clicking on those links, here's what Patrick originally posted on craigslist and on his website the other day:

And here's what he posted on the site today:

Some of my thoughts considering the subject:

There's a fine line we guys ride when approaching a girl we find attractive. There's an invisible balance between "putting ourselves out there" (what some of us call, "growing some balls") and being seen as "creepy".

I'm positive that, to varying degrees, every guy I know has experienced what Patrick did that day on the subway. You see a cute girl, but the opportunity to start up a conversation in a way that won't come across as creepy just doesn't make itself apparent. Or maybe you are able to break that ice, you're able to say hi or exchange a few words but in the given situation asking for her phone number just wouldn't seem appropriate. You could hardly expect her to give her number to someone she's known for 5 seconds. The opportunity is fleeting, and then she's gone. The opportunity has passed and you kick yourself for not doing...something. I know I have experienced this; and, considering recent conversations with roommates and friends, I know they have as well---one as recent as last night.

Anyways, who knows if it will work out between Patrick and this girl, but it sure makes for a great story. Every guy's daydream. Way to go Patrick.

Hanging by a moment

Recent Results: almost pretty sure I made a complete arse of myself today. :(

Conclusion: maybe honesty isn't the best policy...at least not when it comes to girls.

Bonfires are always fun

I've been kind of busy, thus the no new postings of late. but I liked how some of these photos turned out so I figured I'd post.

These are from last Saturday (the 10th) when my roommate and a small group of us went out to Utah Lake and burned some wood palletes and about 7 Christmas trees that this same roommate had been saving behind our house for such an occassion. He's kind of a pyro. :)

Here is said roommate:
and some of his friends that he works with: (these guys are awesome)
Roommate and girlfriend...how cute: Here's my hott date: (no really, she was hot. That fire was HUGE!)

My Friday Night

Well, as you can probobly tell by the picture, I went to a Haunted House tonight. It was fun. I must say there's something about walking through one of those things with a girl clutched to your arm. It's just so rewarding, especially when said girl is cute...which, I must say....she was and is. Thank you haunted house for fostering an environment that leads itself so well to unawkward arm clutching, and hand holding.
