I'm tired

Sean and I did the West Mountain Loop today. Basically we rode from the house in Provo down to Provo Bay, around the big mountain down there following the edge of the lake down to Genola, then back up through West Mountain, Payson, and Spanish Fork back up to Provo.

Here is a rough map of what we did. It's not really accurate (seeing as how we started in Provo and we took a couple different roads once we got to Genola), but you get the idea. That's pretty much the route.

This is what the computer on my bike says:

337 Project

Apparently the owner of an old building in Salt Lake that is set for demolition in June opened the building up to local artists and their "gallery" is now available for viewing. If you're around the Salt Lake area the 25th-27th you really ought to make it out there to see what's taken place. I haven't seen it yet myself, but trust me: I don't plan on missing this experience. There is no doubt in my mind that it's amazing.

The artists ranged from graffiti to formally trained contemporary artists and everything in between. Some of my friends (those reading this post may very well know them or perhaps even be them) contributed to this amazing art project. People like Sam Gray, Chris Coy, and Bardi Haliti. Nickel Creek

My brother and I went to see Nickel Creek in Salt Lake the Saturday I got back from my New York trip. The concert was awesome!

The sound/video quality isn't the best, but my brother recorded the following video from the concert. It's one of my favorite songs.



Jon Brion opened for them and performed with them on a couple of songs. He's produced/composed music for movies like Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, I Heart Huckabees, and Punch Drunk Love.

I was definately blessed to see some amazingly talented artist and musicians that night.

Just finished the first of who knows how many interviews for places in NY. It was at a place called Maloney & Fox.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a very enjoyable experience. It's really a cool place and somewhere I could honestly see myself working at. Really cool environment, people, and approach to advertising from what I could tell. I wasn't applying for a specific position/opening. It was more informational and for them to have my name on file, but who knows. Something might come of it.

Lately

So I realize that I've done a pretty poor job at keeping my blog readers posted on what's going on lately in my life. I just wanted to take this moment to tell you that I...

• arrived in NY just fine (early Thursday morning, the 3rd).
  
• think living with 5 girls is interesting.
  
• have had a fabulous time with dear friends (Shake Shack, Central Park, Sunday dinner, etc)
• stopped by Geppetto and said hi to the peeps there.
  
• went shopping (H&M, Anthropology, etc)
  
• am excited for the interviews I was able to set up for this week.

My first official interview is tomorrow afternoon with Maloney & Fox. Wish me luck.

I'll write more regarding the details of my NYC trip, fun activities, and interviews later. For now, please know that I'm enjoying myself and doing well.

Today I officially graduated!

I also:

• wore a shirt and tie
• received a compliment regarding above mentioned tie
  
• found out that several of my friends look a lot like their parental counterparts
• sat for WAY too long
  
• clapped repeatedly in the presence of President Hinckley
• saw the Vice President of the United States

• surprised several different pairs of friends when they found out that I'm friends with one of their friends independent of my relationship with them (I know a good number of people)

• had an hour and a half phone conversation with a friend
• withstood the pain of a massive headache
  

Yesterday I...

• took my last college final
• clocked into work for like 10 minutes to fill out some employee interest questionnaire thing that made no sense since I'm graduating and leaving that job
• fixed someone's ipod
  
• received an unexpected graduation gift from a friend that means a lot to me (thank you anonymous.)
  
• sat and talked in our hammock with someone I desperately have been needing to talk to for awhile (I'm sorry I didn't say what I did sooner.)
  
• lost my moleskin notebook
• came home to an alarm clock that doesn't show the time anymore
  
• exchanged the brown tassel they gave me at the cap and gown place for a white one like I'm suppose to have (that would have been fun to be the only communications student at graduation tomorrow with a brown tassel...haha)
• received several positive emails about possible interviews in NY
• ate mac & cheese
  
• had a friend call to tell me he found a moleskin notebook with my name on the inside cover on a table in the WILK (at this point, I hadn't even known I'd lost it)
• graded some papers and input some grades (but not nearly as many as I should have today)
  
• got a massage (and oh was it marvelous)
  
• went to bed at like 2 am or something like that

489 Throwdown

OK, so it's almost here. The end of the semester is just around the corner and Monday is our big 489 presentation to EA. Some of you know the immensity of what this means. 489 is a major part of your culminating experience as an advertising student. If any BYU film students are reading this post: it's like 419...on crack.

I just want to say that I'm way excited for Monday. I got home a couple minutes ago, the majority of my evening having been spent running through our presentation with the rest of my group again, and again, and again. I love them! They are awesome!

I can't think of a better group of people I would want to share this culminating part of my college experience with.

We are playing this Saturday at Muse Music with some other very talented musicians (at least, that's what I've been told....I don't know any of them personally, but apparently Taylor does.) Oh! and if you're lucky we will be unveiling a new song as well as have a guest come perform a song or two with us...yes folks, that's right: Rob Whalen. :)

I'll be completely honest,

I lied.

the culprit

So, this is what WAS holding up one of the sides of the Hammock. It originally looked more like an "S," but as you can see...the weight and strain of multiple people in the hammock along with jumping, etc took its toll on the shoddy piece of cheap hardware.

I have sinced replaced it with a carabiner. The hammock should be safe to enjoy once more.

my butt hurts

Funny story:

My friend Liz and I were sitting in the hammock in front of my house Sunday night enjoying the warm night air when I heard a noise I couldn't identify.

I said to Liz, "What's that noise?"

To which she replied: "Probobly the hammock about to drop us to our deaths."

"Oh, we wouldn't die. But our butts might be a might bit sore."

We laughed and continued to slowly and gently rock the hammock back and forth. Then it happened. One moment we were gracefully and comfortably suspended in mid-air, the next we were crashing hard onto the compact ground of my front lawn laughing at the coincidence of it all.

Needless to say, neither of us died. But our butts sure hurt the next day.

3 Cheers for Procrastination!

So I FINALLY finished sending in all my paperwork to recieve credit for the internship I completed last spring/summer.

Starry Night: Show #2

Starry Night is a way cool venue. It's small but uber chill, has fun lighting, and a good house PA system. It was a great show. We had an excellent turnout and played slightly longer than expected since the first opening band didn't show.

I also think we sounded better than our first show. The levels were a little better and I could actually hear myself in the monitors!!! Yeah!

We ended with Flying Over the Atlantic again. People seem to really like it, and it seemed an appropriate lead in to the headlining band since they were playing much softer stuff. I really like this pic.

The band we opened for (Ring of Scribes) was way cool. They played a rock opera called Magic. It's based on the Harry Potter books. It sounds super cheesey, but it was totally awesome. Way cool stuff, and totally relaxing.

It was PERFECT riding weather all week

but I was too busy...so Sean and I decided we'd take to the road this Saturday after I got home from a short game of disk golf with some friends and before we had to go to our show.

Bonfires are always fun

I've been kind of busy, thus the no new postings of late. but I liked how some of these photos turned out so I figured I'd post.

These are from last Saturday (the 10th) when my roommate and a small group of us went out to Utah Lake and burned some wood palletes and about 7 Christmas trees that this same roommate had been saving behind our house for such an occassion. He's kind of a pyro. :)

I have to pass

I was a little worried about my test tomorrow. I hadn't studied at all for this midterm and when our 489 group-meeting adjourned tonight it was T-minus 12 hours before I'd be sitting in class taking said test.

Haha...I'm such a procrastinator. In so much that I didn't even know how horribly I did on our first test in the class. I hadn't wanted to look because I knew it was bad. I had procrastinated studying for that one till the last minute as well.

Anyways, I've been sitting here studying for the past while and decided I should check online and see how I did on the first test. Part of me thought this was a bad idea. I mean, seeing how horribly I did isn't going to make me stress out any less. It's sad, it really is, but all I really want to do is pass the class. It's not an important class to me. I mean, it's cool and all, but it doesn't directly relate to my major. It does stress me to some extent though because I actually have to pass it in order to graduate this April.

Well, let's cut to the chase: I checked my test score for the last test. I got an 82! Beep!!! That's sweet! I'm no longer worried about doing well on this test. Heck, I could do horribly on this test and still be passing. I'm seriously contemplating going to bed now. :)

Ah....bubbles. I liked these next couple of pictures. They're kind of progressive. I mean, we start out pretty chill. We got some nice bubbles doing their thing here.
Then we ditch the bubbles and start singing.
Then we turn it up for full effect. (I look so intense right here.)
Then we decide to throw in some harmonies. Oh yeah. That sounds nice.
We ended up finishing with Flying Over the Atlantic (a favorite of the few who had heard our music before.)

I'm convinced...

I'm convinced that I have the best friends in the world!

Tonight was the premiere performance of The Plan and I was simply amazed by the amount of support we had. Amazed I tell you. I didn't count or do the math but I'm pretty sure that I knew over 3/4 of the people at the show by name. You are so wonderful to me. I love you!

As far as how the show went?...well, that's a good question. Perhaps some of the people that were there and reading this blog could shed some light on that. Comments anyone?

From what I've heard already from people that were there, I think it was a success. Everyone seemed to really enjoy the music. There were a few things I wish could have worked out differently, but overall I am REALLY happy with our performance and with the show. It feels good to have our first show "behind us" or "under our belt" or however you want to put it.

Again, my heart sings out to all of you that were there. Thank you for supporting us and for bringing your energy and enthusiasm to the show! I am convinced I have the best friends ever. Love.

Butterflies aren't always pretty

I'm still awake. That's actually not saying much considering how late I've been staying up lately. I mean it's only 12:13 right now. My staying up-ness isn't so much because I've been studying (although I should be) as much as it is that my sleeping schedule is just jacked up!

It seems that all the stress in my life of late, coupled with my lack of motivation toward school, added to the fact that I don't have early morning classes this semester equals staying up and sleeping in later. It's actually quite sad.

It's hard to break the cycle now that I'm use to this schedule because I don't get tired till way late and I am not a morning person. I'd be tired earlier if I would force myself out of bed earlier, but like that's gonna happen anytime soon.

But that's not the only reason I'm awake right now. I'm actually kind of nervous. I'm nervous for the show tomorrow...scratch that, later today (seeing as how it is technically Wednesday already.) I know I should be grading papers, proof reading a press release, reformatting a flier, logging video, studying for a test, preparing a lesson, cleaning my disaster of a room....the list goes on. But right now I really don't think I could do any of those things that I need to and should be doing. I'm too worried that I'm going to get on stage and freeze....draw a blank....or vomit out the butterflies that I know will be swarming around inside my stomach in search of a way out. If they find and work their way up my throat I really don't know what will happen.

Mostly I just hope that I remember the lyrics. But I'm also hoping that I stay on key, don't look like a complete idiot when I'm unsure of what to do with myself on stage when I'm not actually singing, and am able to keep the audience entertained between songs. I don't know what to say. To be completely honest with everyone, I've never been the leadsinger of a rock band.

It's true, I can sing. I sang many a solo back in the days of highschool choir. I was even the featured soloist in my small ensemble that competed in the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival my senior year. I also went to State (something that perhaps you thought only athletic teams went to). Well I went twice, and placed second. Yes, my senior year of highschool I placed second in Idaho's state solo competition.

All that is fine and dandy. I remember getting nervous then, and yet somehow I made it through ok and people were impressed with my ability to sing...heck, they even awarded me. But doing all that the only thing I had to worry about was singing. The most I'd ever actually "say" to my audience went something like, "My name is Yancy Zimmerman and I will be singing 'Non Posso Disperar' by Giovanni Bononcini." or perhaps I might have to say, "First Tenor, Number 12."

Anyways, my train of thought was broken because my roommate came home and wanted to talk. I'm pretty sure this post is long enough so I'll end it here. Maybe if I read in bed I'll actually fall asleep soon. Perhaps I'll run through lyrics.

Tomorrow, when I'm standing on stage, I just need to remind myself to Breathe In, Breathe Out.

I totally rocked this game

So I'm one of the FHE leaders in my ward and like usual, my co-leaders and myself didn't plan out what we would do until like 5 o'clock today. I am such a procrastinator. Anyways, I ended up sharing a short documentary called Scriptures from the Fit for the Kingdom website. It's awesome. If you know Dean Duncan, then you'll appreciate the short even more.

After the video we talked briefly about the importance of scripture study and such. Then we played this game that a friend of mine told me about. I'm not sure if it has a name, but you're probobly familiar with it. It's kind of like limbo...but not really.

You place a paper bag on the ground and standing on one foot you bend down and pick it up with your mouth without touching the ground with your hands, knees, or other foot. After you pick it up, you tear part of the top of the bag off so it's now shorter. The next person goes.

Well, I just want to say that I totally rocked this game; In fact, when we were done, I ripped a small piece of the bag off and placed it FLAT on the ground just for kicks. Well, I picked it up. Three times.

The Plan: our first "official" show

I apologize for not posting in awhile. But I just thought I would let all of you know that my band is performing this Wednesday night at Muse Music. It's our first "official" show. I hope those of you near Provo can come join us as we rock out with All Over Again and The Fresh Faction.

It's also Sean's birthday that night, so even if you don't want to come hear us perform you should atleast come to wish him a Happy Birthday. :)

doors open at 7:30
we'll probobly be playing at 9ish. So if you can't make the beginning of the show to see All Over Again or The Fresh Faction, you should still be able to catch our performance.
